NYC’s Best Pies for Thanksgiving

November 5, 2021 | 4 min Read

Thanksgiving is a time for gratitude and as everyone knows, it’s also synonymous with turkey, and… pumpkin pie. The pumpkin pie tradition comes from the original meal between the Native Americans and the colonialists where, you guessed it, pumpkin pie was served.

While pumpkin pie is a staple at Thanksgiving, other pies are also in-demand as modern taste buds have expanded to include everything from the traditional to the avant-garde. The following is a short guide on where to find some of the best pies in NYC to bring to your Thanksgiving dinner, or to indulge in with a cup of coffee on a chilly fall afternoon.

Milk Bar

With a winning reputation for edgy desserts, Milk Bar is sure to wow your Thanksgiving table with its pies. This season they’re featuring two pies: the Milk Bar Pie and the Milk Bar Pumpkin Pie. The former with its cult following and rave reviews, was inspired by Southern Chess Pie. It boasts a rich buttery custard center and a hearty oat cookie crust. The seasonal Milk Bar Pumpkin Pie is a gooey, rich pumpkin spiced pie perfect for fall. Milk Bar delivers nationwide, but if you’re just looking for a slice, pop into one of their seven New York locations.

Pies n’ Thighs

With such an irresistible name, we couldn’t not mention Pies n’ Thighs in our roundup. Not to mention that New York Magazine has called Pies n’ Thighs “the absolute best Southern restaurant in New York”. The catchy name is a reference to the fried chicken and handmade pies served up daily. The pie to try here, according to critics, is the banana cream. It’s a classic with Nilla wafer crust and fresh banana and real whip cream! The Bourbon Pecan Pie, another favorite, is a boozy treat with organic pecans, chocolate and a little liquor to keep you coming back, bite after bite.

Little Pie Company

Little Pie Company is a New York City staple dating back to 1985, although last year the business underwent a renovation and is back and open in a bright and cheery space. Little Pie Company is famed for their Sour Cream Apple Walnut Pie; but it would be remiss not to mention Little Pie Company’s Pumpkin Pie, which was featured on the cover of Time magazine. The pies here are made with carefully considered, freshly sourced ingredients; order quickly before Thanksgiving to avoid missing out on your favorite pie. Pies can be picked up in person or delivered nation-wide.

Bubby’s

This airy Tribeca restaurant prides itself on serving simple and fresh American comfort food for over 30 years. Its delicious pies are a tribute to American cuisine and are a celebration of “the patchwork of American culture.” In addition to pumpkin, latticed apple and cherry pies, Bubby’s has a renowned Banoffee Pie that combines bananas, dulce de leche, espresso and whip cream on a graham cracker crust. You can drop by the restaurant for coffee and pie but they’re also available for pickup. If you’re visiting and you want to bring one back for the holidays, you’re in luck, Bubby’s also ships nationwide.

Four & Twenty Blackbirds

The cleverly named Four & Twenty Blackbirds is a collaboration between two sisters, Melissa and Emily Elsen. The sisters created their pie-mecca out of a desire to make hand-made pies with seasonal, fresh and local ingredients. All of the pies here are bound to be a success at Thanksgiving with their flakey and delicious buttery crusts. A stand out and slightly unconventional pie is the Salty Honey Pie with its rich honey custard center atop the gorgeous aforementioned crust. Pies can be ordered online and delivered nationwide. If you’re a champ in the kitchen and want to give pie baking a try, pick up the Four & Twenty Blackbirds pie book.
