NYC Celebrates Black History Month

February is Black History Month. Across the US the month-long celebration pays tribute to the outstanding contributions to American history and culture by African Americans. To commemorate and celebrate, New York City is hosting a series of exhibits, concerts, shows and more. Read on for a few of our picks!

Paris Theater

The Paris Theater in Midtown is hosting a movie series that examines race in America through films and storytelling that focuses on the triumphs and struggles of individuals. According to the Paris Theater, ” …these films do more than hold a mirror up to society; they change the picture and the conversation, affecting history through the act of storytelling.” The list of films includes: Bruised, Mudbound, The Harder They Fall, Daughters of the Dust and many more. Afrofuturism

To celebrate Black History Month Carnegie Hall is hosting Afrofuturism, a citywide festival that explores the future of culture from a Black cultural perspective. Carnegie Hall’s website describes Afrofuturism as, “an ever-expansive aesthetic and practice—where music, visual arts, science fiction, and technology intersect to imagine alternate realities and a liberated future viewed through the lens of Black cultures.” The festival has more than 80 cultural events starting with a kick-off performance from Flying Lotus on February 12. New York Historical Society

Opening on February 11, 2022, the New York Historical Society is hosting an exhibit that celebrates Frederick Douglass’ vision of a more just America. Douglass was a 19th century abolitionist, outspoken freedom fighter and newspaper owner who helped many African Americans find freedom throughout his extraordinary life and works. The exhibit includes artifacts and documents that illustrate Douglass’ ideas and commemorate his work in the fight for equality for African Americans.

Harlem Chamber Players

The Harlem Chamber Players presents the 14th Annual Black History Month Celebration on February 22. Expect a classical concert with some of New York’s top musicians that incorporates a celebration of African American talents past and present. The Harlem Chamber Players has made its mission to bring high-caliber classical music concerts at affordable prices to those who live in the Harlem community and beyond. The concert is free and seating is on a first-come first-serve basis, so arrive early!

The New York Public Library

The New York City Public Library is organizing a series of events this February to celebrate Black History Month. The diverse range of activities span readings, lectures, games and more. Events include Jeopardy: Black History Edition, an adult coloring social hour, virtual storytimes, and coffee and a short story. For a complete listing of events, see the library’s website.

Harlem Heritage Tours

To learn more about New York’s historically African American neighborhood, Harlem, try a walking tour with Harlem Heritage. The tours are conducted by guides who were born and raised in the community, and provide accurate, authentic Harlem walking tours. Many of the tours are multimedia and feature pictures and video while walking through the neighborhood covering cultural touchstones of Black History in America such as civil rights, jazz, gospel and more.
