Lead-Up to Thanksgiving in NYC

November 15, 2019 | 4 min Read

The weeks leading up to Thanksgiving are a great time to get a head start on the holidays and New York, of course, has plenty to offer. But if the whole idea of ‘tis the season makes you cringe, we’ve got you covered with some timeless activities going on in November. This week, it’s a mashup of New York delights: we’re highlighting a few of the must-see holiday shows; a favorite New York comedian, and an iconic American musician playing in town; New York’s very own Turkey Trot race; and perhaps best of all, opportunities to give back.

Radio City Rockettes

Each year, The Radio City Rockettes put on a “Christmas Spectacular” show. If you want sparkle, glitz, and glam, look no further than the 36 Rockettes who dance, twirl and do their signature high kicks in glamorous costumes. The Radio City Rockettes are a historic dance troupe dating back to 1925 and have become synonymous with entertainment in America. The Rockettes are all highly trained and must be proficient in tap, modern, jazz, and ballet! Tickets available online.

The Beacon Theatre

While we love the holidays, let’s be honest, they bring their share of stress. So if you’re in need of a break from all the celebrations and obligations, think about checking out one of these iconic performers at the Beacon Theatre.

  • There are few comedians more at home on the New York stage than the beloved Jerry Seinfeld. A native New Yorker, Seinfeld’s brand of comedy anchored his eponymous sitcom and infuses his current Netflix show, Coffee in Cars with Comedians. Enjoy Seinfeld at his best in a live show. • Another classic American favorite, Bob Dylan is bringing his iconic folk-rock music to the Beacon. Dylan’s poetic, incisive lyrics and music will forever be synonymous with the changes and values that swept America in the 1960s. November 23, 2019

The NYC Ballet - The Nutcracker

New York City Ballet production of The Nutcracker is the embodiment of perfection in its rendition of the classic George Balanchine ballet. The Nutcracker “is one of the most complex theatrical, staged ballets in the Company’s active repertory”, according to the NYC Ballet website. With some of the best ballet dancers the world over, an exquisite set and decadent costumes, it’s easy to see why this is a bucket-list event. Tickets available online, book well in advance to see this holiday classic.

\NYC Runs Turkey Trot

We all know that Thanksgiving is a time for gratitude and also a time for a little indulgence at the dinner table. Why not preemptively burn some calories at the NYC Runs Turkey Trot run this year? The 5k race on Thanksgiving morning is a fun, flat run along the waterfront. The race starts at Pier 84, at West 44th Street and 12th Avenue and continues down to Pier 62 and back. You can also get in the giving spirit by volunteering to work the race for race credits, which can be used at a later race to run for free or can be turned into a cash donation. More information on both run registration and volunteering is available on the NYC Runs website.

The New York City Food Bank

Thanksgiving and the holidays that follow are a time for the expression of gratitude; it is also a time to give to those who are less fortunate. The New York City Food Bank, the city’s largest hunger-relief organization, works to feed, educate, and empower low-income New Yorkers year-round. They rely on volunteers to complete their mission. Information about volunteering on Thanksgiving or another day is available on their website.
