Juneteenth in New York City 2023

June 16, 2023 | 4 min Read

As Juneteenth approaches in 2023, the historical significance and cultural importance of this day are more prominent than ever for all Americans. Juneteenth commemorates the emancipation of enslaved African Americans in the United States, and it serves as a reminder of the ongoing struggle for equality and justice. In the vibrant and diverse city of New York, residents and visitors alike celebrate this momentous occasion with a range of activities that honor the past, uplift the present, and inspire the future.

The History of Juneteenth

Juneteenth references June 19, 1865, when Union General Gordon Granger arrived in Galveston, Texas, and proclaimed freedom for the enslaved people in accordance with the Emancipation Proclamation. The gut-wrenching part of this story is that President Abraham Lincoln had issued the proclamation two and a half years earlier and news of the freedom had been deliberately withheld from enslaved people in Texas. Juneteenth represents the day when the last remaining enslaved individuals in the United States learned of their liberation and finally were able to live as free men and women.
