Lyons Pool, Staten Island

If you want to experience one of NYC’s oldest pools, Lyons Pool is for you. It was one of 11 pools built by the Works Progress Administration in 1936, to provide employment during the Great Depression. Still elegant after all these years, the massive main pool can hold up to 2,800 swimmers. There’s also a separate diving pool and a collection of spray showers for kids to run through on hot summer days.

Douglass and Degraw Pool, Brooklyn

If you’re willing to head out to Brooklyn, you might just find this small spot a bit of an oasis from the larger, more crowded pools. With lots of open space, including benches and a canopy, there’s room to lay out and dip into the pool with ease. Make sure to bring the sunblock, as there’s not a lot of shade at this spot.

Tips for a Great Pool Day in NYC

  • Arrive Early: NYC pools can get crowded, especially on weekends, so aim to arrive early to secure a prime spot.
  • Bring a Sturdy Combination Lock when you head out to the pool. It will keep your valuables safe, and let you hit the water feeling more secure about your belongings.
  • Pack Essentials: Don’t forget your sunscreen, towels, water bottles, and snacks for a comfortable and enjoyable day.
  • Leave the E-readers at home: Electronics and Newspapers are prohibited at all city pools.
  • Follow the Rules: Familiarize yourself with the pool’s guidelines to ensure a safe and pleasant experience for everyone.
  • Stay Hydrated: Swimming under the sun can be dehydrating, so make sure to stay hydrated throughout your pool day.
