Best Fall Pumpkin Patches

New York City may be known as the Big Apple, but come October nearby farms pull out all the stops to make pumpkin picking the activity of fall. Even if you’re just visiting New York and aren’t in the market for a pumpkin, there’s plenty of fun to be had at New York’s friendly farms. Escape the bustle of the city and take in a crisp fall afternoon at one of these five fall favorites.

F&W Schmitt’s Family Farm

Let the fall festivities begin! At F & W Schmitt’s Family Farm there are plenty of activities to go alongside the pumpkins. For the $10 admission fee, you’ll have a full afternoon of fun and you can snag a pumpkin from the massive selection (pumpkin is extra). The activities include hayrides, farm animals, corn mazes, mini golf and there’s a haunted house on the property. NB: Some activities are available only on weekends, so be sure to plan ahead.

Harvest Moon Farm and Orchard

Come hungry to the Harvest Moon Farm & Orchard for a delicious brunch or breakfast at their restaurant before getting down to the business of pumpkin picking. In addition to the pumpkin patch, there are hayrides, live music and a cute farm store where you can take home all kinds of fresh farm goods. Harvest Moon is the perfect place to spend a wholesome fall day.

Wilkens Fruit & Fir Farm

The Wilkens Fruit & Fir Farm is a historic gem that will be celebrating it’s 105th year of harvest in 2021. Known for its delicious homemade pastries, the farm offers peach and apple picking in early fall and pumpkin picking in October. The three on-site markets sell the farm’s own pressed apple cider, freshly baked pies and its famous doughnuts. Indulge while you search for the perfect pumpkin!

Decker Farm

If you’re looking for a history-seeped, pastoral pumpkin picking experience, Decker Farm is your place. Decker Farm (ca. 1810), located in the historic Richmond Town on Staten Island, is New York City’s oldest continuously working family style farm. Most of the structures such as the original farmhouse and large barn are on their original sites. In addition to the farm activities, visitors can learn about 19th century farm life, enjoy hayrides, arts and crafts, and face painting. The farm is open weekends only for pumpkin picking during October. Tickets are available online.

Outhouse Orchards

Despite the name, Outhouse Orchards offers a completely delightful pumpkin picking experience. The pumpkins (pre-cut from the stems) are ready for the taking and the sunflower fields make for a stunning late afternoon setting. With lots of seasonal decorations and activities including hayrides, a corn maze and tantalizing baked goods (the farm stand is stocked with classic fall treats such as cider, maple syrup and donuts), Outhouse Orchards provide hours of family fun.
