Baseball in New York

May 13, 2022 | 3 min Read

Batter up! It’s spring time and what better way to round out a trip to New York City than by watching a legendary baseball team take to the home field. New York is home to two historical baseball teams with rich pasts that intertwine with the city’s identity: The New York Yankees and The New York Mets. Pick your team and plan a day at the ballpark to “root, root, root for the home team!”

New York Yankees

New York’s original team is the New York Yankees. The New York Yankees began playing their first season under this moniker in New York City in 1913, prior they had been called the New York Highlanders. The Yankees have won 27 World Championships (a MLB record) and hold many other MLB titles. Legends such as Babe Ruth, Lou Gerihg and Joe Dimaggio have all played for the Yankees. Because the Yankees have a great track record for winning, their season often extends into the fall.

Game of the Season

One game to be on the lookout for, (although tickets could get pricey) is the mid July games between the Yankees and the Boston Red Sox. These two teams have a century old rivalry and the fans continue the tradition of high energy and intense cheering at these games. You can download a printable version of the Yankee’s schedule here.

Yankee Tickets

New York Yankees tickets start between $10-20, however, these seats are on the upper decks and the view is quite distant. Seats in the 100s and 200s sections get remarkably better and start at $30. If you are willing to spend even more somewhere around $100 or more the view gets quite good where you can see the players and easily follow the ball. For tickets see the MLB site.

New York Mets

Mets fans are diehard and devoted to their underdog team. The NY Mets were founded in 1962 and were put in place to take the spot that had previously belonged to the departing Brooklyn Dodgers and the New York Giants. They belong to MLB’s National League. The Mets have won two World Series (1969 and 1986) and won five National League pennants.

Game of the Season

The New York Mets play as often as 5x a week, so the odds of getting a home game during your visit are high. While there’s no huge rivalry between the Mets and out of town teams, the Subway Series (Yankees vs Mets) games are great to experience pure New York energy as the two New York teams duke it out. You can download a printable version of the Met’s schedule here.

Mets Tickets

The Mets play at Citi Field in Queens, and their tickets, like the Yankees, start at $10. However, these seats are a bit far out for really enjoying the game. Recommended seats are in the red and medium-blue sections (100 series and 300 series). The seats are close enough to the action but not too expensive. Here you can see the players and follow the ball without spending too much cash. For tickets see the MLB site.
