A Picture Is Worth a Thousand Words: NYC Photo Tours

September 20, 2019 | 4 min Read

There’s no easy way to put New York’s energy down on paper: It’s unique, palpable and always changing. But the camera, on the other hand, captures in a fraction of a second what words cannot.

Looking through the lens at New York gives a brand new perspective and an opportunity to hold the city’s energy in the palm of your hand. New York offers several photo tours (aka urban safaris) that are open to beginners, as well as more experienced photographers. Guides take you to some of their favorite photogenic locations, help with your camera skills, and connect you to a different side of New York.

We’ve culled four photo tours that help you capture the zest of New York City with images. Each is a great way to hone your photography skills and experience aspects of New York you might miss otherwise. If you’re the type that prefers to be in front of the camera, we’ve got a tour for you too.

New York City Photo Safari

Imagine yourself photographing the iconic Brooklyn Bridge, the neon lights of Times Square or the historic Union Station. These are just a few of the stop-offs on the many tours that New York City Photo Safari offers. NYCPS employs professional photographers as guides and limits groups to 6-8 people, so you’re sure to receive individual attention and help from your guide. Forgot your camera at home? Not to worry, NYCPS rents cameras, as well as tripods for their night time photo tours. Participants can expect to cover from a half-mile to three miles walking the streets of New York, camera in hand. From $85 per person.

The New York by Night tour includes (depending on timing) the UN headquarters, Grand Central Terminal, the Chrysler Building, Rockefeller Center and Radio City Music Hall; the Soho tour, on the other hand, takes you down old cobblestone streets, past cast-iron buildings and famous restaurants, where New York’s rich past blends with its intense modernity.
