Women’s History Month in NYC

International Women’s Day is March 8 and in 1987 the entire month of March was declared National Women’s History Month. This notable celebration is an effort to highlight the extraordinary achievements of American women. This year’s official theme is “Break the Bias.” This March, New York City is hosting events that pay tribute to the enduring strength and character of American women who continue to shape the country. What better way to celebrate both historic and present day women than checking out some of the activities below.
Women’s Jazz Festival
Celebrate Women’s History Month with some of New York’s most outstanding female performers on stage at the Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture. The Schomburg’s annual Women’s Jazz Festival is renowned for its impressive performances and recognition of other women who paved the way for the performers of today. This year features musical director Toshi Reagon.

The Dinner Party by Judy Chicago
Fancy a dinner party and a history lesson? Stop by The Dinner Party at the Brooklyn Museum. The Dinner Party is an installation piece by Judy Chicago and an important historical icon of 1970s feminist art.
The Dinner Party is a massive triangular table set for dinner with thirty-nine place settings, each commemorating an important woman from history. The motifs of the decorations for the table, the runners, gold chalices, porcelain plates, etc. are based on vulvar and butterfly forms. The names of 999 additional women are written in the tiles beneath the table. The exhibit is part of the museum’s permanent collection.

Poster Kids: Women in Posters
If you’re looking for something for the family, join the Poster House Museum for a special edition of Poster Kids in honor of Women’s History Month. During this online event you’ll tour Poster House’s exhibition Ethel Reed: I Am My Own Property and learn about one of the most famous female poster designers of all time. Ethel Reed’s life and work show the struggles of being a female artist in the male-dominated art world of the late 19th century.
Afterwards, with inspiration from Reed’s designs, figures and lettering, children will have the opportunity to create posters celebrating influential women and girls. The event takes place online.

Monumental Women
Visit “Literary Row” in Central Park and see the art installation titled: Monumental Women, a sculpture that celebrates the lives of three women’s rights activists and pioneers Sojourner Truth, Susan B. Anthony and Elizabeth Cady Stanton. The contemplative sculpture honors the battle for women’s rights and the suffragette movement.
You can also visit the Monumental Women website to learn more about the artists behind the sculpture and the diverse contributions to women throughout New York’s colorful history.

A Female Gaze Photo Exhibition
n a moving homage to women that spans seven decades and photographic works by twelve female street photographers, the Howard Greenberg Gallery is hosting its exhibition: A Female Gaze. A Female Gaze will be on view from January 19 through April 2, 2022. The exhibit takes into consideration not only the female perspective behind the lens but the female subject across a span of roughly seventy years.
Artists in the exhibition include: Berenice Abbott, Diane Arbus, Jodi Bieber, Esther Bubley, Rebecca Lepkoff, Helen Levitt, Vivian Maier, Mary Ellen Mark, Frances McLaughlin-Gill, Lisette Model, Barbara Morgan, and Ruth Orkin. All are renowned for their unique photographic styles and images.
