Actual Size!
Have you ever wondered what the impact of a photo might be if it were life-size? Actual Size! Photography at Life Scale at the International Center of Photography is at once a curious and playful concept as well as a philosophical inquiry as to how size makes an impact. The show offers viewers the opportunity to ponder the difference between a life size image and a real life size object through the lens of photography. A wide group of photographers contributed to the exhibit. And the subject matter varies in range. But pondering an image of a bus that is the size of an actual bus is quite the experience.
One of the impetus behind the exhibit is the surrealist writer, Jorge Luis Borges, who imagined a scenario where there was a map as big as the land it was depicting. The map was obviously useless and the people lived on it as it disintegrated beneath them. But the idea is an interesting one as it examines how we replace reality with facsimiles, and to what end?

Sherlock Holmes in 221 Objects
Grab your magnifying glass and deerstalker hat and head to The Grolier Club. America’s oldest and largest society for bibliophiles and enthusiasts in the graphic arts is fittingly hosting the city’s first Sherlock Holmes exhibition in New York in over 50 years. The exhibit titled: Sherlock Holmes in 221 Objects (the 221 is an homage to Holmes’ Baker Street Address) leverages Glen S. Miranker’s preeminent collection of rare Sherlock Holmes artifacts, including manuscripts, books, artwork and correspondences. In addition to the artifacts themselves, is the recounting of rich literary history and backstories of each piece on display. The exhibit includes four of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s short story manuscripts, holograph letters, private musings and even a calendar where he noted, “killed Holmes” and as a coup de grace, a handwritten speech that explains his reasons for killing Holmes. Don’t miss this treasure trove of intrigue!

The Orchid Show
The annual Orchid Show hosted at The New York Botanical Gardens promises to take visitors out of the grey palate of winter into a kaleidoscope of colors with designs by floral designer Jeff Leatham. This year’s kaleidoscope theme brings together orchids of all types, including the most rare. The flowers are staged to dazzle in towering layers and colors of orange, yellow and green with plumes of purple. The floral creations are displayed alongside artistic embellishments, including a tunnel of lights designed to contribute to the sensation of being in a kaleidoscope. The orchid show is a delight for visitors of all ages. It opened on February 26 and will run through May 1, 2022.

New York Artists for the Bronx
On January 9 a tragic fire ripped through the Bronx. In response, more than two dozen New York artists including Cey Adams, Crash, Lecrue Eyebrows, BC, Louis Angel and others have come together to do something for the victims of the fire. The artists are all participating in an exhibit at West Chelsea Contemporary, in the Chelsea neighborhood called New York Artists For The Bronx. The show opened in late January and will run through this weekend, February 27. As it nears its closing date, the timing for help could not be better to visit and consider purchasing a work of art for a great cause. The gallery will donate 100% of the sale of each work of art directly to the Bronx Fire Relief Fund.
