If you can’t be in Germany for Oktoberfest, New York is probably the next best place to celebrate. While the official Oktoberfest kicks off in September, the annual celebration continues on into the month of October. This week, we’ve scouted some of the best Octoberfest activities in New York City.

Oktoberfest originated in Munich, Germany on October 12, 1810. It began as the celebration of the marriage of the crown prince of Bavaria, who would become King Louis I, to Princess Therese von Sachsen-Hildburghausen. The celebration became an annual event and grew in popularity. Eventually it was exported globally becoming the festival known as Oktoberfest. Prost!

OktoberFest NYC

One of the largest and lengthiest Oktoberfest celebrations takes place on Pier 15 right on the waterfront at Watermark Bar. Watermark’s OktoberFest boasts steins of German beer, giant pretzels, bratwursts and plenty of people in lederhosen. Reservations are recommended and VIP packages are available for maximum enjoyment. The open air festival runs through October 31.

Zum Schneider's Oktoberfest

Zum Schneider’s German restaurant is bringing back its famed Oktoberfest this year; and it’s the first time in three years, so get ready for a very festive crowd. The Oktoberfest event is housed under a giant tent with blue ribbons running across the ceiling while the sounds of beer steins clinking below set the mood. There’s dancing led by the professional Schlierachtaler Schuhplattler dancers clad in Lederhosen in traditional Bavarian style, and the fun continues with a game-and photo booth in the Biergarten. The Oktoberfest celebrations also include imported beer and traditional Bavarian food. Reserve tickets online; options vary from VIP to day passes.
