Dim the Lights and Raise the Curtain, it’s Broadway Show Time!

There’s nothing more fabulous in New York than hitting up a Broadway show. Broadway theater is world-class and this is a chance to see some of the best talent on stage performing history’s greatest stories. We have 5 must-see shows for your hot summer entertainment.

Good Night, Oscar

If you haven’t listened to the Smartless podcast yet, you have so much fun to look forward to! Three actors, including Will and Grace’s Sean Hayes banter and bring the laughs as they interview mostly celebrity guests. But that’s a tangent…

You can also catch the multi-talented Sean Hayes in a very different role on Broadway this summer as he gives a Tony-winning performance in Good Night, Oscar. Hayes plays the real-life pianist-composer and pop-culture icon Oscar Levant. In 1958 Levant went on a live TV (The Tonight Show) to talk about his mental health— while he was on a short leave from a psychiatric institution. The musical centers around this event. The result is pure magic that explores the blurry lines between genius and madness.

Funny Girl

Reviving the original Barbara Streisand role this summer, Drama Desk Award nominee Lea Michele stars as Fanny Brice in Funny Girl. This heartwarming, honest tale tells the journey of the feisty Fanny Brice, a girl from modest means, growing up on the rough Lower East Side. Fanny dreams of leaving her dreary daily life for the bright lights of the stage. Everyone discourages her, but then… just when they least expect it, she becomes a star! Michele’s co-stars, Tony Award nominee Ramin Karimloo, Tony Award nominee Tovah Feldshuh and Jeff Award winner Jared Grimes, round out a top-notch cast that can truly sing with the songs such as the classic, “Don’t Rain On My Parade”.

Kimberly Akimbo

Kimberly Akimbo is the Tony Award- winning musical making waves on Broadway this year. In this musical, teenage Kimberly has an aging illness that makes her look like a grandmother and that will end her life all too soon. But perky and making the best of the time she has, Kimberly wants to live life to its fullest. The show is mostly comedic, but with the serious carpe diem tone that supports the laughs and gives the show its depth and power. A delightful cast and an adept director render this musical not to be missed.

Some Like It Hot

Billy Wilder’s Some Like It Hot was made famous by Tony Curtis, Jack Lemmon and Marilyn Monroe playing leads in the 1950s movie. Its stage reincarnation is also garnering attention with a whopping 13 Tony nominations. This updated tale of a pair of “brothers” who witness a mob crime and must flee Chicago is entertaining and show-stopping in its vocals and music. Some of the best moments are Sweet Sue’s (NaTasha Yvette Williams) jazz numbers that are accompanied by a 17-piece orchestra.

Hamilton

Of course, we would be remiss not to mention the smash hit of the last few years, Hamilton. Hamilton is the winner of 11 Tony Awards with nominations for 16, more than any other Broadway production, ever. The hit musical details the story of founding father, Alexander Hamilton who endured a hurricane, poverty, war and went on to help found the United States— with rap. Blending the distant past with the present is part of the creative genius of Lin Manuel Miranda, who saw Hamilton’s duel with then Vice President Aaron Burr an old school war of words and related it to rap music. Ticket prices are steep (the most expensive of any show on Broadway), but critics and fans alike swoon.
