Best Sledding Hills in NYC

February 4, 2022 | 3 min Read

Inspired by last week’s big storm, we’ve got a round up of some of NYC’s best sledding hills. Sledding is a classic winter time activity that is fun for all ages. From steep drops to the more mellow slopes, NY has a hill for everyone.

Pilgrim Hill, Central Park

Pilgrim Hill is known for its variety of sledding terrain and is probably New York’s most popular sledding spot. It is both steep at points and mellow at others and for this reason, it draws a crowd after any big storm. This is one instance where the early bird really does get the worm— arrive early to avoid crowds.

Morningside Park

This park, which is close to Columbia University, is a hit with students as well as families. An array of hills in this park provide the perfect opportunities for a little downhill speed.

Inwood Hill Park

Inwood Hill Park offers amazing views from the top of its primary sledding hill. The hill has a steep incline and is rarely as crowded as the hills in Central Park. The sledding hill sits just above a salt marsh.

Great Hill, Central Park

On Central Park’s West Side there’s a historical favorite called the Great Hill. It’s the 3rd highest natural point in all of Central Park and home to a hillcrest of open meadow surrounded by trees. The spot was a place of strategic significance during the Revolutionary War when it served as a British encampment site. When the snow falls, it’s a popular sledding spot for all ages.

The Pool, Central Park

Slightly further down the park is the area known as the Pool in Central Park which is also a great option for snow sledders. There are a variety of hills and here, you’ll find something for everyone regardless of age and sledding speed tolerance. The Pool’s location near to the Northern Woodlands and a water preserve make it an ideal spot for wildlife and bird watching, too.

Where to Get a Sled

If you didn’t arrive in New York with a sled and are looking to buy one, try Target, Kmart or Home Depot in the city for options.
