June 30, 2023 | 5 min Read

New York City, the city that never sleeps, comes alive in a whole new way on the 4th of July. As the nation gears up to celebrate its independence, New York paints the town red, white and blue. There are a plethora of exciting events and activities to create a memorable independence day. From mesmerizing fireworks displays to outdoor concerts and lively parades, here’s a guide to a few must-see and must-do experiences in New York City for the 4th of July this year.

See Macy’s 4th of July Fireworks Spectacular

Macy’s 4th of July Fireworks Spectacular is a one of a kind way to commemorate national independence. Be prepared to be dazzled as the night sky over the East River explodes with vibrant bursts of color. There is an orchestra that will play live music adding drama to the color and pop of the fireworks. The festivities also include performances from top talent in the music industry including Ashanti, Bebe Rexha, Brett Young, Ja Rule and more.

You can find entry points for elevated public viewing areas along the FDR Drive in Manhattan and viewing areas at the Queens and Brooklyn parks. For the best viewing, find a cozy spot along the waterfront in Brooklyn, Manhattan, or Queens to enjoy the incredible display. If you want an up-close experience, consider booking a dinner cruise or rooftop bar that offers a view of the fireworks. The event is free. Fireworks are at 8pm.

Picnic on Governors Island

Escape the city bustle of the city and head to nearby Governors Island for a relaxed and fun-filled 4th of July picnic. Governors Island is a 172 acre island in the heart of New York Harbor. A mere 800 yards from Lower Manhattan, and even closer to Brooklyn, it is a slice of rural life in NYC’s backyard. Bring your blankets, snacks, and games, and settle in on the island’s sprawling green lawns. Enjoy stunning views of the Statue of Liberty, Manhattan skyline, and the fireworks. Throughout the day, Governors Island hosts various events, including a 5 and 10k race.

Participate (or just watch) a Hot Dog Eating Contest

Nathan’s Famous Hot Dog Eating Contest is a one of a kind event that feels a bit like stepping back in time. For a unique and amusing experience, make your way out to Coney Island to witness the annual Nathan’s Famous Hot Dog Eating Contest. The crowd is energetic and the tension palpable as competitive eaters battle it out to devour as many hot dogs as possible (last year’s winner ate 63 hot dogs) in just ten minutes. This quirky event has become an iconic part of Independence Day celebrations in New York City and is sure to leave you amazed, plus the people watching is bar none. If you can’t make it in person, fear not, the competition will be covered live by ESPN. The broadcast will begin at 10:45 a.m. EST on July 4.
